I recently made the change of household lights from halogen light bulbs to LED ones. Tired of changing them out, they also serve the function of saving on your electricity costs. Luckily, I've been able to be in the lowest tier of electricity rates before the switch, that the main claim I can make is that they are also better for the environment.
One thing to be sure when buying new led bulbs is to first be sure of what kind of light you want. There are 3 types, soft white (2700k), cool white (4100k), and daylight (5000k). There's a big difference between the colors as cool white is the kind of light that you'll get in an office or laboratory. Soft white is what's most similar to what is used in bedrooms and not as harsh on the eyes. There's not much of difference once the lightbulb is installed. I haven't noticed the gradual loss of light in comparison to halogen and incandescent bulbs so the light quality should be similar throughout the lifespan of the bulb. I'd definitely recommend installing LEDs in hard to reach high ceilings and for any bulbs that need replacement, as the price of LEDs has dramatically decreased in the past couple of years and you'd be cutting down on environmental waste as well.

I had an interesting conversation recently when I explained that my workplace offered fitness classes with showers and the conversation was steered about saving money.
I've heard the rumors in college about how new professors often sleep and work on the school campus; and recently about google employees that were saving money by living in their car and doing everything possible on the google campus such as eating, sleeping, showering, doing laundry, etc. I hadn't realize that I could have done it at my current workplace as well! The only amenity I don't have access to is laundry service. However, I was educated that it could easily be done if I went to a laundry-mat. My living situation could be managed by work, if I chose to! I'm definitely not recommending this to my readers, but if times are really tough and you're fortunate to be working at a Fortune 500 where a company provides meals and showers, it is possible to lower your living costs by not renting out a place and living in your car. Ideally, it would make sense if you could live in a place like this https://sportsmobile.com/mercedes-benz-4x4-sprinter/ that would be less conspicuous and blend in the parking lot, but I'm sure a minivan could be converted something livable. This unorthodox living situation would definitely change your social life, reputation, and mental sanity, but you could definitely put that money saved towards a future down payment, retirement fund, or financial related goals important to you! I was on a budget after closing on a place last year. Yes, even after getting the lowest mortgage rate available at the time and budgeting for other expenses, I forgot to factor in how expensive landscaping was. I needed an appliance to keep water cold. Drinking spoiled milk probably wasn't worth the risk. I decided on a brand new KitchenAid 36" width counter depth French Door refrigerator that was 3000 too much. How could I get it on the cheap? A used fridge that smelled like the previous owner's meals wasn't particularly appealing. Luckily, a lot of stores have floor samples that are like new and have never actually been used. They've just been constantly opened and closed by discerning shoppers. These demonstration units that you see lined up at Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears, etc. need to be sold eventually as well. They might have dents and scratches, but they are a lot cheaper. Plus, you can think of them as hipster and fashionable like the cut worn-out jeans that are so popular these days. You get your own customized uniquely designed fridge on the cheap. I was immediately sold on the idea and went hunting for my particular model. If you're brave, one could buy a floor sample online (with a description about the condition) from Sear's outlet. Being my picky self, I wanted to make sure that my fridge wasn't too custom and unique (aka with a punctured door or tattooed with an imprint of a fist). Driving up to the Sear's outlet that had my particular model took about 2 hours. It had minor dents that only a meticulous midget would notice. Since it was 1500 and had the original warranty if anything went wrong, I agreed. Sear's outlet quickly delivered and set it up in a week and it hasn't had any problems since. Cheers to floor samples. The way to get unique custom decorated furniture/appliances on the cheap! Notice the dent on the bottom right. |
